As our nation celebrates its 250th birthday this Independence Day, we have been reflecting on what makes America special. There are countless reasons to love this country, but among the most meaningful are the men and women who answered the call to serve.
At Knollwood, we are privileged to know several of these heroes personally.
Throughout the years, our veteran residents have witnessed history, overcome challenges, built families, served their communities, and helped shape the country we celebrate today.
As part of America’s 250th birthday countdown, we asked some of our veterans a simple question: “What are you most thankful for?”
Their answers remind us that the greatest treasures in life are often the simplest.
A life filled with experiences, memories, and moments both big and small. Gratitude for the journey itself is a powerful reminder that happiness is often found by appreciating where we’ve been and who we’ve become.

No one travels through life alone. Family members, friends, neighbors, fellow service members, and caregivers all leave lasting footprints on our hearts.
Kindness, respect, and integrity are timeless values. This simple philosophy has guided generations of Americans and continues to strengthen our communities today.
Behind every veteran is a network of loved ones who shared in their sacrifices and celebrated their victories. Family remains one of life’s greatest gifts.
A conversation with a friend. A beautiful day. A favorite meal. Sometimes the smallest moments become the memories we cherish most.
Many of life’s most meaningful memories aren’t marked by grand events or major milestones. They’re found in everyday moments shared with family, friends, and loved ones. A conversation around the table, a laugh with a friend, a quiet afternoon, or a special holiday gathering can become memories we carry for a lifetime.
This reflection reminds us that while America celebrates 250 years of history, our own lives are often shaped by the simple moments that bring us joy and connect us to one another.
