Some voices become part of the soundtrack of our lives.

For generations, Dolly Parton was one of those voices.

Following the passing of the legendary singer, songwriter, actress, and humanitarian at age 80, we’re remembering a woman whose music brought people together for more than six decades.

At Knollwood Retirement Community, many of our residents didn’t simply discover Dolly Parton’s music later in life. They lived alongside it.

They remember hearing her songs on the radio, watching her on television, seeing her movies, singing along to “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” and perhaps most fittingly today, knowing every word to “I Will Always Love You.”

More Than the Music

Dolly gave the world hundreds of songs, but her legacy reached far beyond the stage.

From her humble beginnings in the mountains of Tennessee, she became one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world while remaining known for her humor, generosity, and commitment to helping others. Her philanthropic work included supporting families affected by the devastating 2016 Smoky Mountain wildfires and creating the Imagination Library, which has helped put books into the hands of children around the world.

That combination of music, laughter, kindness, and giving is part of what made Dolly so deeply loved.

A Lifetime of Memories

Music has a remarkable way of carrying memories with it.

A familiar song can take us back to a particular person, place, dance, car ride, or chapter of our lives in an instant. At Knollwood, we see the power of music to create connection and bring meaningful memories to the surface.

And Dolly certainly gave us plenty to remember.

So today, from all of us at Knollwood Retirement Community, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Dolly Parton and the joy she shared with generations of families.

Her voice may be gone, but the songs aren’t going anywhere.

We will always love you, Dolly. 1946–2026
