Let the Good Times Roll at Knollwood Retirement Community
Knollwood Retirement Community celebrated Mardi Gras with a festive float parade, live music, and New Orleans cuisine that brought residents together.
Mardi Gras Magic at Knollwood Retirement Community
A Fat Tuesday Celebration to Remember
On February 17, 2026, Knollwood Retirement Community transformed into a scene straight out of New Orleans as residents gathered in the dining room for our Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday Celebration. And yes, the good times absolutely rolled.
This year’s theme invited residents to turn their wheelchair, walker, or cart into a Mardi Gras float, and creativity was on full display. Beads shimmered. Feathers danced. Masks, ribbons, and bold splashes of purple, green, and gold filled the room with unmistakable Mardi Gras sparkle.
A Parade of Personality and Pride
The morning kicked off with a parade and judging celebration that had everyone smiling. Residents proudly showcased their decorated “floats,” each one reflecting individuality, humor, and heart.
Prizes were awarded for:
Most Creative Design
Best Mardi Gras Spirit
Most Colorful Float
Crowd Favorite
The competition was friendly, but the spirit was contagious. Laughter echoed through the dining room as neighbors cheered each other on. What stood out most was not just the decorations, but the pride residents felt participating in something joyful and shared.
The Soundtrack of Celebration
As the morning festivities wound down, the energy only grew stronger. Renowned saxophonist Rodney Conner filled the room with live music that brought everything together. The smooth, soulful sound of the saxophone turned lunch into a full Mardi Gras experience.
Residents tapped their feet, swayed to the rhythm, and some even formed impromptu dance circles. It was the kind of moment that reminds us how powerful music can be in bringing people together.
And no Mardi Gras celebration would be complete without enjoying traditional New Orleans cuisine. Residents savored festive favorites, including our particular crowd-pleasers, overstuffed shrimp po’ boys and hearty jambalaya, bringing the flavors of the French Quarter right to Knollwood’s dining room.
More Than a Party
While the feathers and beads were dazzling, this celebration represented something deeper.
At Knollwood Retirement Community, events like our Mardi Gras parade are part of our commitment to providing more than just a place to live. We create opportunities for residents to stay active, engaged, and socially connected.
Decorating mobility devices into festive floats was not only fun. It encouraged creativity, dexterity, confidence, and participation. It reframed walkers and wheelchairs from simple tools into expressions of personality and pride.
Our team supports residents in maintaining independence while offering assistance when needed. From daily support services to enriching activities, everything we do is centered around dignity, engagement, and community.
Where Community, Creativity & Celebration Come Together
Mardi Gras at Knollwood was a beautiful example of what happens when community and care meet celebration. Residents were not spectators. They were designers, performers, judges, and stars of the show.
The beads may be packed away for now, but the memories linger. And if this year is any indication, next Fat Tuesday may require even more feathers.
At Knollwood Retirement Community, we believe life should be lived in full color.
And sometimes, that color is purple, green, and gold.
